How and When to Ask Customers for Google Reviews
What to say, when to ask, and how multi-location brands can improve review generation without friction.
How and when should you ask customers for Google reviews?

Google reviews are comments and ratings that users leave on business listings through Google Maps. For other customers, they are a fast way to judge quality and trust. For brands, they are a key input for reputation, local visibility and conversion.
How to ask for reviews
- Deliver a strong experience first. Ask only after the customer has received the value of your product or service.
- Choose the right moment. The best time is usually when satisfaction is highest.
- Be direct and personal. Generic messages tend to underperform.
- Explain why the review matters. Customers are more likely to help when they understand the impact.
- Make it easy. Share a clear link or simple instructions.
- Use multiple channels. Email, SMS, social media and in-store prompts can all support the request.
- Be careful with incentives. Always respect Google policy.
When should you ask?
Research suggests that response rates are strongest early. Many reviews are left in the first 24 hours after an experience, and the percentage declines over time. Even so, it is still worth asking after several days or even two weeks if you did not do it earlier.
Without a reminder, the chance that a customer will come back later and leave a comment tends to fall sharply.
If your business operates multiple locations, a review request process should be part of the operating model for every branch. The more consistently you collect feedback, the more local trust and visibility you build.
